Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 revealed

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 revealed

There isn’t a car fan in the world who wouldn’t be delighted to wish the Golf GTI a happy 35th birthday, but Volkswagen would prefer we show our appreciation by purchasing the commemorative model it has lovingly crafted for the occasion.

The manufacturer has just revealed the Edition 35, a breathed-on Golf GTI with a bit more poke and sharper styling which is due in showrooms before the end of the year.

Sound familiar? It should do. Volkswagen pulled the same trick five years ago with the introduction of the Edition 30, a MK5 built to exactly the same recipe.

No ones complaining though. The 30 was a fine car, and we’ve got high hopes for its MK6 successor. Power from the standard GTI’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine has been boosted to 232bhp, which puts it about on par with the previous model, but some way behind the current Golf R at 266bhp.

However, the Edition 35 will have a significant weight advantage over the range-topping, all-wheel drive R and Volkswagen will have almost certainly taken the opportunity to tweak the car’s suspension for sharper handling.

Any performance gains will go hand in hand with a range visual upgrades which include a revised front bumper and a new alloy wheel design.

Model-specific badging should be prominent, with the door sills and bucket seats bearing the Edition 35 tag. Expect the golf ball gear knob to return, too.

There’s no confirmation on UK prices yet, but speculation puts it above the f27k mark. Three and five-door examples are both expected following the car’s show debut in Austria next month.

Production suspended at Japanese car plants in wake of quake

Japanese car maker Toyota has led the suspension of all auto production at its domestic factories because of difficulties securing car parts following the devastating earthquake and tsunami on Friday.

A report on the Mainichi Daily News website reported that Toyota officials had announced the continued suspension of work on Monday at its five domestic plants, including those operated by its subsidiaries and 12 auto parts plants.

Toyota subsidiary Central Motor Co. makes Toyota vehicles at its plant in Miyagi Prefecture and Kanto Auto Works Ltd, also a Toyota unit, produces Toyota cars at its plant in Iwate Prefecture. Both prefectures were severely affected by the 8.9-magnitude quake.

A Toyota official said the suspension is partly to check whether workers at the factories are safe.

Meanwhile, Nissan will also suspend production at its three domestic plants on Monday as two of them were damaged in the earthquake. Others to follow suit included Honda, Toyo and Sumitomo while Mitsubishi and NEC said they will check lines at their plants to determine whether to resume production on Monday.
